Sam Wilson
25-year-old Sam Wilson is making her mark in the East Coast music scene. A well-rounded musician, Wilson is a guitarist, bandleader and composer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her frequent engagements at Compass Distillers and Mappatura have helped set the stage for her full- length debut, Groundless Apprehensions.
With the support of Music Nova Scotia's Artist Development Grant, Wilson has created a post-bop modern jazz recording entitled, Groundless Apprehensions. It features a jazz quintet stacked with local talent including Andrew Jackson (Trombone), Paul Tynan (Trumpet), Tom Roach (Drums), and Matt MacLennan (Bass).
Originally from Windsor, Ontario, Wilson moved to Halifax after graduating from St.FX University, where she completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours in Jazz Studies. She has furthered her education through music workshops at the Lunenburg Academy of Music. In 2017, she released her first solo EP, Into a Heart- an experimental solo electric guitar recording. Wilson has played Open Waters Festival, Halifax Jazz Fest, and this August will be attending Ottawa's 21st Century Guitar Conference.
A promising, young musician, Wilson hopes to inspire more women instrumentalists to pursue their passion as she anchors herself as an creative force in the East Coast music scene.
